Cetus' course selection is introduced In this course guide. We arrange many different kinds of courses for you who are interested in swimming, water excercizing and other sports in the pool.
A suitable course is picked out according to the swimmer's / participant's skills. Please note, that it is not possible to visit on our courses, but the enrollment is always compulsory to the whole course. Thereby, pay attention to each course's starting level requirements before making the enrollment. The minimun age limit to our adult courses is 15 years. To the chidren's courses the age limit is defined separately on each coursetype.
Baby- and familyswimming are shared moments of exercises and play between babies and parents. The main goal is to become friends with water and to support the early interaction between the baby and its' parent. During baby swimming the child will not learn how to swim without parental support, but the child will learn how to play and dive in the water with the assistance of a parent.
You may attend to babyswimming, when your baby has gotten the 3 months' vaccinations and weighs 5 kg. The main goal is to become friends with water and to support the baby's development and growth.
1-3-year-old children may attend to familyswimming with their parents. The main goal is to learn skills that are needed in Peuhu-uimakoulu ("Play and splash"), become friends with water and support the child's developement.
Siblingswimming is meant for famlilies where there are a (3 months-1 year old) baby and a under school aged sibling/siblings. The main goal is to become friends with water, support the childrens' developement and growth, and increase their courage in operating in the pool environment.
Play & Splash
Play and splash Swimming Schools help children to get used to the water. We teach children important pre-swimming skills by means of stories and playing. Play and splash Swimming Schools give good preparedness in starting a swimming school. The courses are arranged in the teaching pool and the course lasts 30 minutes. To attend the groups, the child has to be at least 100cm tall.
Child-adult swimming school
This group is meant for 3-5-year-old children who still need parental support in playing in the pool and functioning in a group. During the course the child can get used to the water in a safe environment and will get used to group functioning.
Play and Splash
Play and splash -course is meant for children who haven’t necessarily spent much time in the water yet, but know how to operate in a swimming pool. Additionally the child has to have the courage to take a dip in the water and to function as a part of a group without any parental support.
In swimming schools we teach elementary skills in swimming. We teach also the important pre-skills for swimming such as floating, gliding, and jumping into the pool. The teaching takes place mainly in the Teaching Pool but as the skills develop we will spend more time in the Deep Pool. The child can attend to a swimming school when he/she has turned 5 years old.
Swimming school for beginners
In Swimming school for beginners -group is meant for 4-5-year-old children who already can act courageously in a group following the teacher’s advice. In the group we teach skills such as diving, floating, gliding and also basic skills in swimming. Child attends this swimming school without the parent. One lesson lasts 30 minutes.
Swimming school 1
In Swimming school 1 the children will practice elementary swimming skills such as swimming position, breathing and kicking. Starting level requirements: The child is not afraid of the water and can put his/her face into the water. The child can act in a group according to instructor’s advice. The child can attend to a swimming school when he/she has turned 5 years old and has to be at least 100cm tall.
Swimming school 2
In Swimming school 2 the children will develop their swimming skills further, and practice body control and breathing technique. Starting level requirements: The child can float, glide, dive and swim 5 meters (elementary front- and backstroke) and make a jump to the teaching pool with his/her feet first.
Swimming school 3
In Swimming school 3 the children will develop their swimming skills and gain confidence in swimming in the deep pool. They will be also familiarize with diving. Starting level requirements: The child is able to swim 15 meters (elementary front stroke with the right breathing technique and elementary backstroke). The child can also dive into the bottom of the pool (80-90cm deep) and has encourage to make a jump into the deep pool.
Waterrally-courses are versatile courses in swimming and they are suitable for children who have already gone to swimming schools (beginner 1-3 levels). Practicing the basics of different swimming sports and supplying challenges for children are the essence of these courses – without forgetting to have fun of course! During the different course levels the child will become familiar with waterpolo, diving, synchronized swimming and the techniques of the different swimming styles. Waterrallies are suitable for 6-12-year-old children. We recommend participating to technique courses only after Waterrallies.
During the course we will practice the right swimming position, breathing technique during swimming and body control in the water. On the course the child can merit a Frogpin. Starting level requirements: 25m continuous swimming ability in the deep pool (elementary front- and backstroke).
During the course we will deepen the skills learned during Water rally 1, such as body control in the water, right swimming position and right kind of breathing technique during swimming. On the course the child can merit a Fishpin. Starting level requirements: Frogpin (Water rally 1) and minimum 50 meters continuous swimming ability.
During the course we will practice swimming in a more comprehensive matter. Breaststroke and butterflystroke will also become familiar. On the course the child can merit a Sealpin. Starting level requirements: Have accomplished a Fishpin (Water rally 2) and have the ability to swim 100 m continuously (50m backstroke and 50m frontstroke).
During the course we will deepen the skills learned during Water rally 3, and comprehensive swimmingtecniques will become even more familiar. On the course the child can merit a Dolphinpin. After accomplishing Water rally 4-course the child can continue to a children’s technique-course, or participate to an evaluation occation for competitive swimming. Starting level requirements: Have accomplished a Sealpin (Water rally 3) and has the ability to swim 150m continuously.
Technique course for children
This is a course for children that already know how to swim. We practice the different swimming techniques (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). We also practice starts and turns. Starting level requirements: Have accomplished a Dolphin-pin (Water rally 4) and knows the basics of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Has the ability to swim at least 100m continuously both freestroke/breaststroke and backstroke.
Discover new sports
Snorkel diving is diving with basic equipments (other equipments are not used). Basic equipments are mask, snorkel and finns, which are recommendable to acquire after the first lesson. During the snorkel diving courses we will practice also the basic skills in safe diving. During the course we will swim, dive, play and practice the diver’s signs. To attend the basic course the child has to be able to swim at least 50m (freestyle and breaststroke) and to dive 5 meters in lenght.
Basic course in Water polo, also called “Vesis”, is about having fun in the water with a ball. This sport is the first step towards water polo, and it is meant for children who have already turned 6 years old. During the course the child gets to know the basics of water polo and strengthens his/her swimming skills. We focus in the basics of water polo by means of playing and having fun. Exercises we do on the course are for example handling the ball, trampling the water and practicing team skills.
On the diving courses we will teach the basic skills in Olympic Diving. As a starting level requirement for the course level 1 is 50 m continuous swimming ability in the deep pool. The participant has to have the courage to dive from 1m platform with his/her feet first and to do a tuckfall/somersault from the pool edge. To participate to the next level the child has to be able to swim at least 50m continuously in the deep pool, and has to have passed level 1.
On the basic course we will practice the basics in synchronized swimming and start to practice the techniques required in the sport. Additionally to the training related directly to the sport, we train swimming and do choreographic & flexibility exercises. Starting level requirements: 50m continuous swimming ability and the courage to dive. On the course we will train moves with one's head underwater.
Junior Life Saver
Junior Life Saver courses are meant for children who have turned 7 years old, and are interested in developing their skills in Life Saving. During the course we will practice how to operate when someone gets in danger in the water. We will train how to use life saving equipment, how to carry one another in the water, how to give first aid and how to resuscitate. We also train how to call for help and other rescuing skills. During the courses we will also get to know the swimming hall’s rescuing preparedness. Starting level requirements for JLS 1: The child is able to swim 50 meters freestyle and 50 meters breast style. Starting level requirements for JLS 2: The child can continue to Junior Life Saver 2-course when performing course 1.
Have a hobby
The hobby group offers the child and youngster a regular swimming hobby without any competitive goals. Starting level requirements: Have accomplished Children’s technique-course or Water rally courses (a Dolphin pin), or alternatively has the ability to swim 200m continuously + mastering the basic techniques of the different swimming styles.
Hobby group special
The group is meant for children and adolescents who can swim in the deep pool and master the basic techniques of different swimming styles, but have special needs (as for example a physical disability).
WAU and Muuvi groups are arranged in cooperation with Espoo city, and are free for participants. Both groups are arranged right after schooltime, and 7-12-year-old children are welcomed. The groups are arranged in Espoonlahti, Keski-Espoo and Tapiola swimming halls. There are a limited number of places and the participants have to reserve a place from each group in advance.
We arrange sports camps during summer on weekdays (mon-fri from 9.00 to 15.00). On the sportscamp we swm and play different games. (We play outside if the weather allows us to.) The participants are divided in two groups based on their age and skills. Starting level requirements: 50 meters continuous swimming ability on stomach and on back in the deep pool. The child has to be at least 7 years old to participate in the camp.
Competetive swimming in Cetus begins from the Mix-level. Different contents of swimming, syncronized swimming and waterpolo are mixed together. In CetusMix-groups young swimmers will versatily develope their motoric basic skills and competence in the water, and get to know the typical excercizes of these different swimming sports. CetusMix is suitable for 7-10-year old children who is starting their competitive hobby.
You can apply to CetusMix twice a year.
Learn the basics
On the Beginners’ swimming courses we will teach gaining confidence for controlling oneself in the water and of course the basic skills in swimming. The participants have to be at least 15 years old.
Beginner level 1
The goals for the participants on this course is to get used to enjoying the water, and to be able to float, glide, swim 5 meters, and to be able to dive underwater. Starting level requirements: The participant has courage to take a dip in the water.
Beginner level 2
The goals for the participants on this course is to accomplish 15 meter’s swimming ability (back and front) in the deep pool among other basic skills. Starting level requirements: 5 meters swimming ability and the ability to dive underwater.
Beginner level 3
The main goal for the participants on this course is to be able to swim 25 meters (back and front) in the deep pool. Starting level requirements: 15 meter’s swimming ability (back and front) in the deep pool.
During the swimming technique courses we teach the basic techniques of different swimming styles and sharpen them to be even smoother. We also teach the turns and starts of the different swimming styles. You can choose a longer course for learning all the four swimming styles, or shorter one to just concentrate on one style. Please, note also the different course levels.
Swimming technique course 1
The goal of the course is to master the basics of back- breast-, free- (and butterfly) styles. Starting level requirements: The ability to swim 100m continuously in the deep pool.
Swimming technique course 2
During the course we will sharpen the techniques and turns of all the four swimming styles (freestyle, breast stroke, back stroke and butterfly). We will also practice on the starts of these swimming styles. Starting level requirements: Mastering the basics of back- breast-, freestyles. Have the ability to swim 200m continuously in the deep pool.
Freestyle technique 1
The goal of the course is to learn the techniques of freestyle (crawl) swimming. We will begin from the basics as the right position and breathing technique. Starting level requirements: Have the ability to swim 100m continuously in the deep pool.
Freestyle technique 2
During the course we will sharpen the technique and turn of the Freestyle (crawl) swimming. Starting level requirements: Mastering already the basic technique of freestyle (crawl) swimming, right swimming position and breathing technique.
Breast stroke technique course
The goal of the course is to learn and sharpen the technique of breast stroke. We begin from the basics as the right position and breathing technique. Starting level requirements: Have the ability to swim 100m continuously in athedeep pool.
Condition swimming group
Condition swimming group meets once a week to sharpen the swimming techniques and turns, and to practice long distance swimming and swimming different programs (1000-2000 m). A goal is to maintain a continuous swimming hobby and to improve one’s condition. Starting level requirements: Completing the Swimming technique course 2, or good skills in swimming (at least 200 meters continuously)

Olympic diving for adults
Diving courses are meant for adults, over 15 years old. During the course level 1, we will practise the basic skills and techniques in diving, mainly from 1 meter’s springboard. When attending the course level 2, the participant must master already the basic skills. During the level 2-course we will dive from 3 and 5 meters platforms and 3m springboard. Starting level requirements for course 1: Have the ability to swim 50 meters continuously. Have the courage to jump from 1m platform with feet first.
During the courses you will learn how to practice freediving efficiently and safely in a pool environment, and get to know the safety matters and risks of freediving. You will also get to know the theory of diving, like bodily physical phenomenon during diving. After carrying out a freediving demo, you may join Cetus’ Diving club and attend AIDA 2 pool-course.
Mermaid swimming school for aduls
In the Mermaid Swimming School you'll get to practice the mermaid-kicking (dolphin kick with the monofin), to dive with versatile drills, and to have fun and forget everything else for a moment. Swimming with the mermaid-costume and -fin is also a very effective midriff-excercise. Starting level requiremets: To participate, you have to be able to swim at lest 50meters continuously, and you have to be a good diver.
Life Saver-course for adults
We teach saving oneself and others from water, and how to act in a dangerous situation. You will familiarize using toss device, transporting and lifting one another up from the water, basic skills in ER, how where and when to call help, and other rescuing skills. During the course you will practice diving and rescue swimming a lot. These skills strenghten your assurity to act as a swimmer in challenging situations. Starting level requirements: To participate, you have to be able to dive under the water, to swim 50 meters freestyle (=crawl) and 50m breast stroke.
Water gymnastics, aquarunning and hydrobic are effective but safe ways to exercise which suit everybody. Water’s resistance makes the exercise efficient but due to the floatability it doesn’t strain the joints.

Hydrobic is an effective and a refreshing exercise in the water with music. The tempo is more intense than in water gymnastics. There might also be some choreographs with music during hydrobic lessons
Powerhydrobic is a bit more effective exercise than its little sister hydrobic. During the lessons you will get your heart rate up! We will train aerobics in the water and also muscel training with the help of different equipent.
In Cetus' Masters-group you can train swimming 1-5 times a week. The goal is to establish swimming as a full hobby. If there is interest, you may also compete in age classes. Additional information about Cetus Masters you will find at: www.cetusmasters.fi.
